When I was referring to ads, I meant tail-end ads at the end of your mails - like the "GET YAHOO MESSENGER NOW!" things that Yahoo! adds.

Now - the advertisers may well prefer large banner advertisements, but I personally, as a consumer look at text ads, I dont go to a banner's url - especially not the trick windows and the like.

Also - look at just how many people are using google's AdSense - I recently signed up for it - Adverts from one central base on google are displayed on literally hundreds of sites - hence making the advertisement more widely spread from google's centre...

But this is not a discussion about ads, is it? We could talk for ages about ad revenues, and optimum placement, content and the like. As for hotmail! dont even get me started - opening windows and the like.
