Question Why do Multimedia Programs Cost So Much

How come photoshop and macromedia flash cost near a thousand dollars. I know it took a very long time to make it but it should be easier to access.:evil-tag:

We can also factor in the number of pirated copies out there. They have to make a living somehow. Is it true that adobe can tell if you’ve made an image with a pirated copy of their software?

I doubt it. Also, if you are too cheap to buy it, you can always visit torrent sites, they are full of them.

Promoting piracy isn't a good suggestion. You may wonder why multimedia programs are expensive...it's not just because, "they can." These programs are built to industry standards.

I guess you're right. Maybe if everyone bought these programs instead of downloading them *cough* the prices would be lower..

As mentionned above, Photoshop or 3D Softwares such as 3D Studio Max, are made so that other giant projects can be created out of them. Now that SoftImage is coming up stronger and stronger, you might end up seeing some price war, but I wouldn't hope for it too much

I also don't get it... If they would lower the prices more people will buy the program. And some people wouldn't even download the program, but just buy it if it's a normal price, because it's not very easy to download a good program.

I got all the programs for free (photoshop, illustrator, indesign, premiere, flash, director, freehand, dreamweaver) I got them from school, so they are all student license, meaning I can't earn money with them.

But there is one good thing to say about adobe and macromedia... they actually don't mind if you make a copy or download it. They really don't! If you just use it for private use, they don't care at all. They actually only care about the companies. So as soon you begin as a real freelance designer, make sure you buy the legal things! And once you bought the legal program, you only have to pay a little to update it to the next version.

When I start as a real freelancer (still 2 years to go) , I will only buy the programs I really need. So if I buy Illustrator, I don't need indesign and freehand. And for dreamweaver I will just use notepad.

What is seldom taken into account in threads of this nature is the wealth of openly developed software out there that, though it may not match the features of the application's mentioned above, does a damn good job of trying - for instance:

Photoshop - If you cant afford it, instead of piracy, why not try The GIMP?
3D Studio - Why not try blender?
Illustrator - Why not try inkscape?

gimp: GIMP - The GNU Image Manipulation Program
blender: http://www.blender.org
inkscape: Inkscape. Draw Freely.

All 3 are fantastic free software offerings, they do a great job, and the community support for them is brilliant!

So instead of saying photoshop is too expensive, look at the alternatives, and then ask yourself: do I need the additional features of this software?

If not - stick with the lesser cost. If you do, then I assume you already have the software anyway.

Regards

It's very expensive. Do you think the prices are fair?
If the quality is good, the price if fair for me. It's fine to spend bucks as long as I'm satisfied.

I own Illustrator and Xara Xtreme. I use Xtreme more than illustrator. Xara Xtreme is a illustration software like Adobe Illustrator and only runs $79.99 I think. I have used it for years and will never stop using it. It is a great program and for an affordable price. So if you are looking for something new then check it out and save some money.

I also heard once that you can use Adobe software the student versions for commercial use.

According to me, Multimedia Programs costs so much because
(1) They are meeting the industry expectations
(2) Piracy
(3) A lot of cost had been incurred in completing the product
