Default Navigation Prefence

What kind of navigation system do you perfer?
Are you the kind that is a lefty or a righty or a double or a unique top.
I am a lefty. I write with my right hand and do navigation with my left.

Righty as im right handed, but I think all sites should make it ambi dextrous, or at least be able to change sides.....at least all sides that get a large volume of visitors and have accounts...

Hm. I'm not sure I understand the question, but I usually like to see navigation links in the header and on the left side of the page.

I don't mind if it is left/right/above or some sort of unique fun way, it gives character to each website layout.

Left or right is fine with me, but don't do dropdowns I hatem :) But a navigation should be able to easy to be find and to use!

I like left and top - and if the site has long pages - i.e. a forum or blog type site - there should also be a quicknav bar at the bottom. Navigation should be about convenience - and it's a pain in the butt to have to scroll all the way to the top of the page after reading. On a highly traveled site, giving people a choice of templates with navigation on different sides is awesome.

I like right, but I don't mind left. A plus, is when there is a right AND a top. Or for sites with a lot of content like this, a floating nav system that follows you around would be good.

yeah that's good, all forums should have that. Cause the pages can become very long and it is annoying to keep scrolling as someone said before!

You've also got the Forum Jump dropdown box and the link to http://www.infitechdesign.com/
I think that covers all the basic navigation.

I really like dropdown boxes as well, they're nifty at times, annoying at others...depends how they're used......

I don't care for drop down boxes either, but don't have a preference for left, right, or top navigation. I do think people are used to top and left-side navigation . Herd mentality and all... (this is where I need a cheesy smile emoticon, eh?)

I like my navigation at the left or top. I'm too used to having my navigation in those places. I never really had my navigation at the right hand side before.

Let me throw my 2 cents in on this one...DO NOT limit yourself to a "preferenec". If you want to be a good designer or even a great designer STOP thinking in convential methods and DO NOT limit yourself.

totally agree. I see to many posts on this forum asking where should I place this, or where this?

It all depends on the style and kind of visitors you want to gain!!!!

I can understand not limiting yourself, but less conventional navigation systems would be strange to try to implement. For example, having the navigation controls in the center of a page. Or having all the navigation locked in the bottom half of the page and the content in the top half. Sticking to some standards makes it easier for the users to move around quickly.

The best design advice on navigation I've heard:

Pick something and stick with it. Consistency throughout your site is more important than sticking to typical standards, though Kevin makes a good point about unconventional navigation methods. Center navigation... now THAT would be a departure from standards.

I perfer top and left. I have no big reason on why I like those two. When I first started designing web sites. I used left or/and right. I just been using them ever since then.
